Specializing

For years and years (and years and years), I have been designing for non-profit clients. I started out with print, slowly adding web and a little strategy for good measure. But recently (the last few years), I have been getting more small business clients. And with that, has come a shift in client needs. Most large non-profits partner with developers or content management companies to provide flexible solutions for the site's functionality. I have been there to help them make it aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly. In short, my focus has been on design and usability, while overseeing the implementation of my vision. I have not had the need to delve into the back-end of the site. Until now.

Being a one-woman show means just that—providing clients everything they need from concept to completion. Sometimes, I just need to deliver a PSD, but more often (lately anyway), I have been implementing my designs. And each project has been a learning experience. While I prefer good old-fashioned design, making a site pretty and making it work is very satisfying. Let's just say that there's a lot of trial and error. Lucky for me, there's an abundance of resources to help make it a little bit easier...

Apparently, this week just ran away from me. It's Friday and I have posted next to nothing all week. Getting back to normal after vacation is always difficult... especially when I have only enough time to get settled before I leave again—this time for a long weekend in DC (leaving next Thursday.) But I wouldn't miss out on posting some links, 'cause it's always fun to share cool stuff.

A Classic

We're back after a week "off" in Montana. While I was away, nearly every book I had on hold at the library became available, so today's trip was rather successful. One book we brought home was In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak. I haven't read this book in years and I forgot how wonderful all of the illustrations are. It also made me recall some controversy surrounding the nudity in the book and how many libraries don't carry it because it depicts a naked three-year-old. Absolute silliness, if you ask me. The book is still great after nearly 40 years. And that's that.
